How does it help disc bulges and prolapses?
The IDD therapy machine applies a gentle traction force to the prolapsed or bulging cervical or lumbar disc. Whilst applying this computer controlled force it applies gentle oscillations to the involved disc. This helps reduce the disc bulge and take pressure off the trapped nerve root. At the same time it helps improved the oxygenation and nutrition of the disc by drawing in fluid from the surrounding tissues. In turn this helps accelerate the healing process of the disc.

IDD consultation
At an IDD consultation our goal if discover if IDD therapy can help you, if its appropriate for you, and explain if we can help. We will also give you hints and tips we can to help you manage pain and heal faster.
A typical IDD consultation for a disc problem takes 45min to 60 mins. It consists of a medical and spinal history, a physical examination, an orthopaedic examination, a neurological examination, and reviewing your MRI images (or completing an MRI referral for you if needed). During the neurological examination we will test your reflexes, test your myotome muscle strength, test your sensation, and check you for an upper motion neurone lesion. We will typically compare your good side to the bad side.
On completion of the history and examination we sit down with you and discuss our findings. We will explain your MRI and discuss your symptoms and choices with care. It’s important to know IDD therapy is not appropriate for everyone. There are a small list of contraindications regarding why people can’t have IDD therapy, and we need to screen you to make sure the care provided is appropriate. Additionally, there are some presentation’s that will not respond well to care. For example: large bony spurs can trap and compress nerves. IDD is not going to help in that circumstance (even if you have an associated disc bulge). We will always be open and honest with you. If we don’t think we can help we will tell you. If we can help, we will set your expectations, and tell you how much treatment we expect you will need. Additionally, we will also outline the course of care and tell you when we will reassess your progress.
Want to learn more about IDD?
We have a short video to inform you about how it works and the benefits of IDD therapy
This video talks about the design and development of IDD therapy as a treatment for disc bulges and prolapses in the West Midlands, Birmingham, and Stourbridge area. It discusses how traction influences the disc fibres and reduces the disc bulge. It talks about a typical course of care and how the patented oscillation IDD provides is the key to restoring health to the damaged disc.
IDD Therapy Treatment Overview
Experience effective back pain relief with IDD Therapy. Each 55-minute session includes:
- 10-minute preparation with a far-infrared heat belt to relax lower back tissues
- 25-26 minutes of computer-controlled decompression therapy on the Accu-Spina IDD Therapy machine
- 10-minute cold therapy to soothe the treated area
Our advanced IDD machine ensures your comfort throughout the entire treatment process.
The number of sessions you require depends on your specific condition and in particular the conditions of your discs. Your practitioner will thoroughly examine you, and review your MRI or xrays, and then make their recommendation to you and clearly outline how many sessions you will need.
No, not at all. While the treatment uses powerful traction forces, our advanced technology delivers them in a way that keeps your body completely comfortable. The deeply relaxing nature of IDD Therapy often lulls patients to sleep during their session.
Your body naturally releases endorphins during treatment, creating a pleasant sensation and enhancing the therapeutic experience. This combination of precise decompression and natural pain relief makes IDD Therapy both effective and enjoyable.
IDD Therapy revolutionizes spinal treatment through its innovative tilting bed design, addressing key limitations of traditional traction methods. This advanced feature serves two essential purposes:
Treatment Entry
- Patients step onto the bed while upright
- Eliminates harmful twisting movements
- Prevents unnecessary disc pressure
Post-Treatment Transition The bed’s primary tilting function shines after treatment completion:
- Gradually returns patients to an upright position
- Enables progressive weight-bearing transition
- Protects the spine by avoiding twisting movements
This thoughtful design enhancement ensures a safer, more controlled treatment experience compared to conventional traction approaches. The gentle transition from treatment to standing position supports optimal therapeutic outcomes while prioritizing patient safety.
No, there’s no need to change into special garments – just wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement.

Spinal discs do not physically ‘slip’. They are anchored firmly to the bones above and below them. Discs can bulge and herniate though through injury or the ongoing effects of osteoarthritis (degeneration). Spinal misalignments left unchecked, can contribute to this degeneration process.
<br/ class=””>Spinal misalignments can develop to the point where one day you may bend over, something ‘gives way’ or ‘slips’ in your back and you feel pain, locking and an inability to straighten properly. It feels like a slipped disc and this is why it gets its name. It is however locking of joints due to pinching of tissues, inflammation and muscle spasm.
Spinal injections are often used to help improve painful inflammation, which is a cause of pain. They allow the body to settle and temporarily improve. An injection is not intended to address the problems of compression of discs or stiffness in the spine. Typically spinal injections are not a long-term solution for most people for that reason.
Patients who have undergone surgery may be eligible for IDD Therapy. To qualify, the surgery must have been performed over six months ago, and the spine must be free of implants. Contact our team today to discuss your spinal history and explore your treatment options.
In the past five years, over 37,000 IDD Therapy treatments have been performed in the UK alone. As the leading non-invasive disc treatment, IDD Therapy is the preferred choice when manual therapy is ineffective, where available. With a global network of over 1,000 clinics, including surgeons, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and osteopaths, IDD Therapy is transforming spinal care worldwide.
If you have an MRI or X-Ray, bring it with you. The MRI or X-Ray helps us to confirm the spinal level that we wish to treat and the nature and severity of the disc problem. This will help us to get a picture of the protocol that will give us the best outcome for a successful course of care. If you don’t have an MRI or X-Ray, we can discuss this with you and organise one where appropriate. We can provide a referral letter directly to Heath Lodge Clinic in Solihull. MRI’s are currently £329.
Unlike other imaging techniques, MRI scanners use magnetic and radio waves to generate highly detailed images of tissues, organs, and structures within the body, which can be viewed on a computer. This advanced technology provides superior diagnostic quality without exposing patients to harmful radiation.
The nerves in the LB exit the spine through IVF’s (inter vertebral foramina). Essentially these are holes in the spine that are adjacent to the joints as well as the discs. If a disc bulges or prolapses, it narrows the space through the hole and puts pressure on the nerve causing a “trapped nerve”.
They cost approximately £50,000 and require specialist training and insurance to operate.
Accu-SPINA® makes them in the USA in Atlanta Georgia.
There are only approximately 50 IDD machines in the UK currently. It’s not unusual for our patients to attend from all over the West Midlands and Birmingham area. Some from Wolverhampton, Rowley Regis, Edgbaston, Harborne, Smethwick, Oldbury, West Bromwich, Dudley, Walsall, Tyseley, Solihull, Kidderminster, Bromsgrove, and Worcester. Obviously, we also see more local people from the Stourbridge, Kingswinford, Hagley and Pedmore area.
We treat lot of types of disc problems, from small bulges, to large disc bulges, central disc bulges, posterolateral, foraminal, disc prolapses, disc protrusion, disc herniations, disc extrusion, disc annular fibre tears.
Yes there are discount available for block booking a course of care, or you can simply pay-as-you-go the choice is yours.
Yes there is a refund policy. If you buy a package, and suspend care part way through your treatment plan you can get a refund for the remaining treatments. Indeed, before you buy a package you sign an agreement saying you get a pro rata refund for the remaining appointments (with no admin charge). For example, if you have half the treatments and stop care, you can have a refund for half the package. This is for IDD therapy, chiropractic, sports therapy, or massage.
The initial assessment cost is £65. This consists of a consultation which is a medical history, followed by an examination. After that we sit down with you, explain our findings and your options and let you know if we can help (and ultimately if IDD is appropriate for you). If you need an MRI we can organise that for you.
Your progress is measured subjectively with pain forms and quality of life forms (where you rank your reply between 1-10). Additionally all the objective tests that were problematic at the consultation are repeated to measure the improvement. For example your reflexes, straight leg raise height, range of motion, muscle strength, sensation testing etc.
